Winn Las Vegas welcomes Popeye by acclaimed American artist Jeff Koons as part of the resort’s continued appreciation and commitment to the public art. Standing 6ft 5in tall and polished with mirrors over 2,000 pounds, Popeye stands proudly in Winn Espanade.

It took two years to create the sculpture (2009-2011) and was acquired at an auction in May 2014 for a price of $28.115 million. Coons created three versions of the famous character (plus the artist’s proof), one of which now calls Win Las Vegas home. The sculpture depicts a spinach-eating navigator with a vivid spectrum of colors. Since his creation in 1929, Popeye has become known as the ultimate American hero. Audiences across the country could relate to the famous muscle man and identify with the little man who became powerful with just a can of spinach. Popeye marked the beginning of pop art in the early ’60s, when Andy Warhol began to portray him in various paintings. Decades later, Popeye now marks the end of pop art with Coons’s latest creation. “I became attracted to Popeye’s image in a very intuitive way,” Coons said. “I wanted to have a conversation with art history and pop art, and a conversation to deal with aspects of technology and acceptance.”
