South Korea’s Byun Sung-hwan has been named to the final 21-man roster for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The Korea Football Association on Thursday announced the 21-man roster for the U-17 squad that will compete in Indonesia from Nov. 10 to Dec. 2.
The roster includes 16 players who competed at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-17 Asian Cup in June, including captain Kim Myung-jun, who plays for the Pohang Steelers U-18 team in the K League 1, as well as Kang Min-woo (Ulsan U-18), Lim Hyun-seop (Suwon U-18) and Yoon Do-young (Daejeon U-18).
Bae Sung-ho, Woo Jung-hyun (Daejeon U-18), Baek Ga-on (Seoul Boy’s High School), Lee Kyung-jun (Suwon U-18) and Han Seok-jin (Jeonbuk U-18), who did not appear at the Asian Cup but have since impressed Byun during training camps in Korea, Indonesia and Spain, have also been selected.20 of the 21 players were born in 2006. Han Seok-jin is the only 2007-born player.
“It’s unfortunate that some of our players are unable to join us due to injuries, but we will continue to play active soccer at the World Cup with one mind and dominate the game no matter what team we meet,” Byun said. The team will convene at the Paju National Training Center on the 30th and train until the 5th of next month before departing for Indonesia on the 6th for the final match.
Byun will compete in Group E alongside France, the United States, and Burkina Faso. Next month, the team will face the United States on Nov. 12, followed by France on Nov. 15 and Burkina Faso on Nov. 18.The 24-team tournament will feature 16 teams, including the top two teams from each group and the four best-performing teams from the third-place group, to determine the eventual winner.
